Pause

Hey everyone. I've been working on a video. It will be up soon. In the meantime I've noticed that my pocket knife is excessively dull. Sharpening seems to be on the list of things to do. I have a few methods to try. Any favorite brands or tools or things of that nature you might suggest? I have always felt hesitant about sharpening knives. I guess I think I might be doing it wrong. Just something else to look into, yes? Until later my friends.

  1. If it's a pocket knife like a Swiss army knife or any other knife with a stainless blade it will be very hard (not to say you can't do it) to sharpen. I have found that sharpening them on a chefs knife steel works well since it's made for stainless knives.
But do yourself a favour and get a nice hi-carbon steel knife Go to this page on my blog to read more about hi-carbon and stainless

  2. I got a pocket knife sharpener for Christmas last year. It's about the size of a large Swiss Army knife. It's got a carbide slot, a ceramic slot, and a fold out sharpening steel you can use on serrated blades. The brand is Smith's and you should be able to find it at Wal-mart or any outdoors supply store.

  3. Nice! Thanks wa-ya. A quality knife is on my list of discoveries. Your blog has some good detail and in fact I had never even thought about the metal. I guess I was typical in thinking that a knife is a knife.. but you have brought to my attention that it isn't. I also like that you point out that a wood handle isn't as likely to give me blisters. I can tell you that that is on the top of my list.

Kate - For sharpening my Gerber I mostly use those little buggers that have a V so no real skill is involved. But your kit sounds pretty handy.. and compact. I am thinking I will pick out a few different ones like that and do a side by side comparison.

    Thanks for reading!
